About the Ethics Board
The Town of Southampton Board of Ethics was established pursuant to General Municipal Law Section 808. The Board of Ethics is comprised of seven members who serve for stated terms and receive no salary or compensation for their services as members.
The Board of Ethics may render advisory opinions to town officers and employees with respect to the Code of Ethics. The Board of Ethics makes recommendations with respect to amendments to the Code of Ethics. The Board of Ethics receives and investigates all complaints alleging violation of the Code of Ethics upon written request of any individual or on the board's initiative.
The Board of Ethics has the power and authority to render reports and recommendations to the Town Board for appropriate action regarding conflicts of interest in violation of the Code of Ethics and/or General Municipal Law. The Board of Ethics acts as the repository of completed disclosure forms required to be filed pursuant to Chapter 23 of the Town Code.
The proper administration of government requires town officers and employees, whether elected or appointed, paid or unpaid, and/or serving as a member of any administrative board, commission, or other agency, to act fairly, impartially, and without taint of conflict of interest in fulfilling their public responsibilities. It is the purpose of the Board of Ethics to enforce the Code of Ethics which provides standards of conduct, in addition to those set forth in Article 18 of the General Municipal Law, to assist town officers and employees in discharging their duties in a proper and ethical manner and to provide for annual disclosure and transactional disclosure by elected officials, certain local political officials, and applicants in order to ensure impartiality and fairness in the administration of local government.
