Southampton Town Prepares to Implement Single-Use Plastic Bag Ban

In preparation for the Town-wide implementation of the single-use plastic bag ban on Earth Day, April 22, 2015 the Town’s Sustainability Committee wishes to alert local businesses about opportunities to participate in its “We Bag to Differ” public awareness program focused on reminding shoppers to bring their own bags.

“Our goal is to make this transition away from single-use plastic bags as smooth as possible for businesses and shoppers, and to spread the excitement about this environmentally significant regional initiative,” said Dieter von Lehsten, co-chair of the Sustainability Committee.

As part of the campaign, business owners and representatives are invited to distribute informational literature and hang posters created by the Town, and to participate in awareness events, and/or sponsor reusable bag giveaways.

Business representatives interested in learning more about these participation opportunities are invited to call the Citizens Response Center at 702-2440 or email

The Town has worked jointly with municipalities along the length of the South Fork to enact the plastic bag legislation, broadening the reach of the ban to East Hampton Town, and inclusive of the Villages of Quogue, Southampton, Sagaponack, North Haven, East Hampton.
