Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman was sworn in today in Southampton Town Hall before a standing room only crowd. The ceremony, held at noon, began with bag pipers entering the Town board room. The Rev. Michael F. Smith of the Shinnecock Presbyterian Church gave the invocation and his granddaughter Elisia Smith-Ivey sang the National Anthem.
Mr. Schneiderman was sworn in by the Honorable Sundy Schermeyer, Town Clerk. Following his swearing in, Mr. Schneiderman noted the history of the Town that celebrates its 376th year this year. “We have a rich tradition beginning with the Shinnecock Nation, I’m confident we will continue to serve our culturally diverse community.”
Mr. Schneiderman also noted he has “met with many of the department heads in recent weeks and “I’m impressed with the dedication and professionalism of the town management team.” “I look forward to working with all the town employees who work in this great town from those who plow our roads during a snowstorm, to the crews who keep our parks in shape, to the people who help feed our seniors at our nutritional centers.”
He also said he is “looking forward to working with John Bouvier, our newest Town Board member, to improve our water quality in our bays and harbors.” I want to work with Stan Glinka to help small businesses and improve our economy.” “And I am eager to work with Christine Scalera. She could not be here today, but I plan to work with her on economic development issues, including the revitalization of Riverside.”
Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone was among the dignitaries at the ceremony. Mr. Bellone spoke to those gathered before the ceremony. He said Mr. Schneiderman is “truly a unique individual.” “The people of Southampton will know what a great Supervisor they have elected.” “I’m really excited about the opportunities that exist here.” “We will be a partner in the things that you want to do here, that you envision on water quality which we all so care deeply about.” “We will be a partner with you, Jay.”
Also sworn in today were Southampton Town Board Members John Bouvier and Christine Scalera, Tax Receiver Theresa Kiernan, Town Justice Gary J. Weber. The Southampton Town Trustees also sworn in today were Scott Horowitz, William Pell IV, Eric Shultz, Edward Warner Jr. and Bruce Stafford.
