- Inventory and analyze the Town’s significant land and water resources and identify strategies, improvements and programs to conserve and revitalize those resources.
- Provide professional and technical services to enable the Town to administer and implement a wetlands protection program pursuant to Chapter 325 of the Town Code, including the delineation of wetland boundaries, issuance of both Conservation Board wetlands permit and Administrative wetland permits approved by the Chief Environmental Analyst.
- Provide professional and technical assistance to the Town Board, Board of Trustees, Conservation Board, other appointed boards and committees and Federal, State, County and Town departments.
- Prepare studies, plans and specifications for the conservation and restoration of natural resources.
- Plan, coordinate and participate in natural resource conservation and restoration projects and programs conducted independently by the Town or in partnership with the Town Trustees and other public, private and not-for-profit interests.
- Work closely with the Regional Protected Lands Council in the development of a comprehensive regional management plan for public lands within the Central Pine Barrens Area by formulating goals, objectives and implementation strategies relating to natural resource protection and management, public access and enjoyment of public lands, community education and stewardship, interagency coordination and planning, and environmental/conservation enforcement.
- Play a lead role in implementing the South Shore Estuary Reserve Comprehensive Management Plan through partnership efforts with the New York State Department of State (NYS DOS).
- Work closely with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), NYS DOS and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County in implementing a comprehensive wetlands restoration and enhancement and management plan for town-owned degraded wetland sites in the Peconic and South Shore bays.
- Assist private landowners in developing woodland, beach, dune and wetland restoration plans to address local resource protection needs and ensure compliance with Sections 330-33 thru 330-69 (Aquifer Protection Overlay District), Chapter 138 (Coastal Erosion Hazard Area) and Chapter 325 (Wetlands) of the Town Code.
- Provide public information and education regarding natural resource protection
- Foster working relationships and partnerships between the Town of Southampton, Town Trustees and the New York State Department of State, especially in the areas of coastal resource protection and management of shellfish and underwater lands.
- Work closely with other town agencies and departments in addressing non-point source pollution through active and passive stormwater recharge.
- Strengthen cooperation and coordination between the Town and the County in the development and implementation of the Peconic Estuary Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan.
- Provide technical guidance and environmental monitoring services with respect to protection of rare, threatened and endangered species.
- Provide technical input and assistance with regard to the development of a Regional Comprehensive Plan to protect groundwater and ecologically significant areas east of the Shinnecock Canal.
