PSA: EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS 08/28/2011

Local broadcast media please advise your listeners/viewers

Dune Road in Hampton Bays continues to be CLOSED with a manned police roadblock - We do not anticipate it being traversable for the immediate future. No one is being permitted access to Dune Road or the Ponquogue Bridge.

Although the worst part of Irene has passed we still anticipate winds with gusts of up to 50 MPH continuing until about 5 PM according to the National Weather Service.

For anyone who is west seeking to return to the township please note:

  • We have approximately 55% of our residences without power.
  • Due to power outages numerous traffic signals are not operational at a number of major intersections, and due to still gusting winds, traffic direction is not practical.
  • Numerous roads including Montauk Highway in East Quogue, and Hampton Bays due to water across the roadway and poles across the roadway.
  • Unless you are a utility worker on assignment, DPW or highway worker or emergency responder responding to a call for service we ask that you remain off of the roads at this time, especially if solely for the purpose of sightseeing.

Town Highway crews have begun the process of assessing damage and opening roadways. Opening roadways may also be hampered by the presence of power lines tangled with the downed trees.

We also ask that residents stop calling and tying up emergency lines to ask when their power will be back up. They need to either contact LIPA direct or listen to local radio stations that will be providing that information if available - we are unable to do so.

Please continue to assist us by not becoming a part of the tasks at hand.
