Overhaul Begins for Quantuck Culvert
Highway Personnel Expect Safer Road, Healthier Estuary
Southampton Town officials announced on Friday, May 13, 2022, that key improvements are underway in Quiogue to enhance roadway safety and protect the local environment.
The Town’s Highway Department, headed by recently sworn-in Highway Superintendent Charles McCardle, took the initiative of replacing the failing culvert on South Country Road, just east of the intersection with Old Meeting House Road. The structure is a critical pass-through for the Old Ice Pond, Quantuck Creek, and other tributaries before they open into Quantuck Bay.
“We moved quickly to buttress the failing headwall on the south side,” reported McCardle. “The repairs will make the road safer and minimize the impact on the local landscape and the estuary’s natural habitat.”
In addition to South Country being a well-travelled thoroughfare, the surrounding area, which includes the Quogue Wildlife Refuge and its Fairy Dell Boardwalk, is a destination in its own right for visitors near and far.
“We are also installing a new kayak ramp and stairs,” concluded McCardle. “People will more easily enjoy Quantuck Creek, especially its scenic views.”
