Town of Southampton, NY July 20, 2022 — A Heat Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service and is in effect for our area for Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Although the Heat Index for the South Fork is expected to be less severe than the Western portion of Suffolk County and Western Long Island, and does not trigger our emergency plans, residents in Southampton are still encouraged to take precautions.
The Town of Southampton would like all residents to be aware that heat exhaustion or heat stroke can affect otherwise healthy individuals who do not take proper precautions during the summer’s heat waves. The best prevention for the two dangerous heat conditions is to remain indoors in an air-conditioned room. “If your home is not air-conditioned, visit a library, movie theater, one of our community centers, a store, or cool down in the water at one of our beaches during the hottest hours,” said Supervisor Jay Schneiderman. Town Emergency Manager Ryan Murphy identified those with increased vulnerability to heat as including, “Older adults, infants and children, those with certain chronic conditions, athletes and individuals in occupations that work outdoors as per the CDC.” Those individuals with increased vulnerability should attempt to stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible and avoid any strenuous activity. Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing; drink plenty of fluids such as water, fruit or vegetable juices, and iced tea to replace fluids lost by sweating.
Some symptoms of Heat Exhaustion include: weakness, heavy sweating, nausea, and pale skin. Heat Stroke is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention and treatment by a doctor. Symptoms include: faintness, dizziness, headache, nausea, loss of consciousness, body temperature of 104 degrees or higher, rapid pulse and flushed skin. Know the signs of these two heat illnesses and seek immediate medical help if someone appears to be in trouble because of the heat. Resting in bed away from the heat and drinking cool liquids treats heat exhaustion.
“We want everyone to enjoy this beautiful summer weather, but we want people to be safe while doing so,” said Supervisor Schneiderman.
