The Town of Southampton Youth Bureau is continuing to address food insecurity on the East End with two upcoming initiatives. With the support of the Southampton Youth Board, the Youth Bureau will be installing a second Little Free Food Pantry on the Hamptons United Methodist Church property in Bridgehampton on Monday, September 26th at 11:00am.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Youth Bureau installed their first Little Free Food Pantry at the David Crohan Community Center located at 655 Flanders Road in Flanders. The Kiosk style box is currently stationed right off the parking lot so that community members can safely park and either contribute donations or help themselves to food that they may need. With community support, the project has been very successful with donations coming in weekly.
“We are very grateful to the Cotes family for their time in building the Little Free pantry located in Flanders and our newest pantry to be installed on the grounds of the United Methodist Church in Bridgehampton.” said Lynn Nyilas, Town of Southampton Youth Bureau Director. “The Little Free Food Pantry provides an anonymous way for folks to not only access food, but contribute as well.” Town of Southampton Councilman Rick Martel has also expressed his support for the Youth Bureau’s efforts. “We have seen more families struggling since the pandemic and it is wonderful to see our youth stepping in to help find a solution to ensure people do not go hungry” said Councilman Rick Martel.
The next initiative that the Town of Southampton Youth Bureau will be sponsoring is a “Stuff a Bus Food Drive” on Saturday, October 15th from 9:00am – 3:00pm at the Stop & Shop in Hampton Bays. Stop & Shop customers will have the opportunity to purchase non-perishable food items and drop them off on the Youth Bureau’s bus once they exit the store. Donations received from community members will benefit other local food pantries such as Maureen’s Haven. The Youth Bureau is appreciative of Stop & Shop’s endorsement for hosting the event.
