With the first snowfall of the year for our area having occurred this week, and ahead of a coastal storm expected to bring rainfall and wind gusts to our area this Thursday and Friday, the Town of Southampton would like to take a moment to remind people of some winter weather preparedness information and safety tips.
“The Town of Southampton encourages all of our residents to pay attention to winter weather forecasts and exercise safety and caution during winter storms this season,” said Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman. “Our Town Highway crews, Parks and Municipal Works employees, as well as police, fire and emergency medical services responders will be out trying to keep the Town safe, but we need all residents to take steps to be as safe as possible during winter weather events too,” Schneiderman said.
Town Code Compliance and Emergency Management Administrator Ryan Murphy indicated that some steps that people can take to be safe are to, “avoid travel during hazardous winter weather conditions if possible, make sure your heating equipment is serviced and in good working order, dress appropriately for the weather, and have necessary household supplies on hand before a weather emergency happens.” People should also recognize their physical limits and be cautious of overexertion when shoveling snow. Sharing Murphy’s sentiments about avoiding travel, Highway Superintendent Charles McArdle asked residents and visitors to, “please give our dedicated crews a chance to clear the roads and stay off of them if possible during snow events this winter.” McArdle also stressed the value of taking parked vehicles off the roads when snow is expected so that crews can more safely, easily, and effectively navigate and clear roadways.
The Town of Southampton encourages residents to make a family plan before winter weather events, know where to go for safety during events and be cautious when going outside or traversing the roadways during and after winter weather events. Additional information about ways to prepare for severe weather events can be found on the Emergency Management page of the Town’s website (www.southamptontownny.gov) and on the Safety page at the National Weather Service’s website (www.weather.gov). The Town is always monitoring possible weather events so that it can prepare and try to minimize negative impacts to our area. The Town encourages all residents to do the same and to stay informed before, during and after severe weather events.
