Public Safety & Emergency Management Recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October

Code-Enforcement-October

Town of Southampton, NY October 2, 2023 – The Southampton Town Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management will be wearing special uniform shirts on Fridays in the Month of October to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Town of Southampton Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management consists of the Fire Marshal’s Office, Code Enforcement, Animal Control, the Town Litter Crew and Emergency Management. Uniformed staff from each of these divisions along with all of the administrative and office support staff will be wearing special pink uniform shirts on Fridays in the month of October to help bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “As members of the Town of Southampton community, we are proud to play even a small part in trying to bring attention and enhanced public awareness to Breast Cancer Awareness month and the ongoing needs for high quality care, education and early detection,” said Town Code Compliance and Emergency Management Administrator, Ryan Murphy.

With a foundation in 1985 as a week-long campaign, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has served as a mechanism to promote actions and activities that can enhance disease prevention, as well as to promote programs and activities that provide support to those who suffer from the disease or those who have loved ones who suffer, or have suffered, from the disease. Community groups, businesses, public health organizations and individuals all participate in a variety of endeavors during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to show their support. “I am so happy to see our Department of Public Safety show their support for this cause,” said Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman. “Many of our employees are also residents of the Town and part of our community. This is a caring and supportive community and the Department of Public Safety first and foremost cares about the health and safety of our residents, so it is befitting that they would promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” Schneiderman said.

When Town Clerk Sundy Schermeyer, who has supported the Ellen Hermanson Foundation locally and has had family members impacted by Breast Cancer, learned of the new Public Safety effort she commented, “I think that the choice by the Town’s Public Safety and Emergency Management Department to help bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month is admirable. Everyone probably knows or has a connection to someone affected by breast cancer and we must continue to stress the need for early detection, high quality care and support for those impacted by the horrible effects of this disease.”
