Hampton Bays, NY - The Hampton Bays Water District is proud to announce the receipt of a significant grant from the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation. The district has been awarded the 2024 Water Infrastructure Improvement Grant (WIIA) amounting to $4,705,200 for the installation of a wellhead treatment for the removal of per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) at Plant No. 3.
The primary objective of the project is to install wellhead treatment for two supply wells that have detected low levels of PFAS. This initiative is in response to upcoming federal guidelines that will lower the allowable levels of these compounds in the well supply from 10 parts per trillion to 4 parts per trillion by 2027. The treatment system will include four pressure filters containing granular activated carbon media to reduce PFAS levels to non-detectable amounts. These treatment vessels will be housed in a building to facilitate year-round operation.
In addition to the new treatment system, the plant will undergo extensive modernization. This includes upgrades to its electrical and control facilities, improvements to existing treatment systems and wells, and enhancements to existing buildings to extend their useful life.
James Kappers, Superintendent of Water for Hampton Bays Water District, stated, “Although the wells meet all current guidelines for water quality, the implementation of this treatment will proactively allow the district to meet future regulations while continuing to provide the residents of Hampton Bays with a reliable source of clean and safe drinking water.”
The Hampton Bays Water District is committed to ensuring the highest standards of water quality and service for its residents. The receipt of this grant marks a significant step forward in our efforts to maintain and improve our water infrastructure.
