The Southampton Senior Shuttle Fleet will soon add two new buses to its operation after receiving a generous grant from the New York State Department of Transportation. The buses are used primarily by the Town’s Senior Services programs that include socialization opportunities and meals on wheels.
Two older buses were recently retired from the fleet because of high mileage and frequent repairs. The Town applied for the State grant which will cover all but 20% percent of the total $206,307.00 cost for the two buses. The State’s share is $165,045.60 while the Town will pay the remaining $41,261.40.
The two new, more reliable passenger transit buses will be used to meet increasing demand for the senior and handicapped transportation program that brings participants to doctors and hospital appointments, shopping, the post office and nursing home visits.
The Senior Services Transportation Program provides door to door pick up transportation. The program runs from 8:30am to 4:00pm, Mondays through Fridays. Riders are asked to contribute $3.00 one way or $4.00 round trip. Reservations are required and must be made a minimum of five days in advance by calling 631-728-1110.
The Transportation Program provides a valuable service to many of our seniors. These new buses will make the service more reliable.
