The Assessor’s Office will soon be mailing out the 2019 Assessment Notices. If you receive a notice, it will indicate that there has been a change in your assessment. Below is some helpful information that may help you understand the change. If you have questions about the reassessment or would like to discuss your assessment, please contact the Assessor at 631-283-6020. We will be able to assist you and provide information on what you need to do next. Our office hours are Monday – Friday 8:30am to 4:00pm, if you would like to come in and speak with our staff.
What impact does an increase in assessment have on my taxes?
Assessment increases town-wide, could possibly have a minimal impact. Typically, when all property values increase, you may see either a slight increase, decrease or no change in your taxes. If school and municipal budgets remain stable with no increase in their tax levies, you could possibly see a decrease in taxes.
Possible reasons for your assessment increase:
- New construction/renovation
- Missing or incomplete inventory from a prior year
- Changes in market conditions*
- Expired prior year court decisions
*The sales period used to determine the 2019/20 assessments is July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018.
If you believe that the 2019 assessed value is not reflective of the market value of your property as of July 1, 2018, you may want to file a grievance. Information on how to file a grievance will be available with your notice.
This year, for your convenience, we offer an online Grievance Submission portal. Beginning April 22nd, go to the Town website for more information www.southamptontownny.gov/Assessors. This service will be available for you to submit your Grievance as early as April 22, 2019.
