Southampton Town Police in conjunction with the Governors’ Traffic Safety Bureau we will be conducting seat belt enforcement.
Remember to buckle up every time. Seat Belt Safety Starts with You.
Your kids are watching. Children whose parents or caregivers buckle up are much more likely to buckle up themselves.
The safest choice you can make as a driver or passenger is to buckle up. No matter what type of vehicle you drive, wearing your seat belt is the best defense against impaired, aggressive and distracted drivers. Even if your car has airbags, the safest way to ride is properly buckled up. Always place the shoulder belt across the middle of your chest and away from your neck, and place the lap belt across your hips, not your stomach. You should never put the shoulder belt behind your back or under your arm.
Nearly 27.5 million people still don't buckle up. In 2017, there were 10,076 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the United States. Almost 57 percent of young adults (18 to 34) killed in crashes were completely unrestrained, and 59 percent of pickup truck occupants who were killed were not buckled up. In 2017, 51 percent of men killed in crashes were not buckled up, compared to 39 percent of women. Southampton Town Police along with agencies across the state will be conducting enforcement from May 20 to June 2 to ensure that motorists are wearing their seat belts. Because there's no excuse good enough for not buckling up. Buckling up: Make it common practice and it will become common practice.
