Invasive species affect us all. They’re in the forests, fields, and waters – and often in our backyards! Unfortunately, these species take quite a toll on sensitive habitats, agriculture, and even recreation activities. The good news: learning about these invasive plants, animals, and diseases is the first step toward making a positive impact on our treasured native habitats.

New York State has declared July 7 – 13, 2019, to be Invasive Species Awareness Week. Events will be happening on Long Island and all over the state.

A full week of free programs in the Town of Southampton will give everyone a chance to get involved! You can learn more at the info sessions and a weed-removal demonstration day, listed below. These programs are brought to you by the Town of Southampton Community Preservation Department (CPF), the Long Island Invasive Species Management Area (LIISMA), Cornell Cooperative Extension, and other partners.

Aquatic Plant Day

July 8, Monday. 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge

A day of aquatic plant identification and potential removals at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge (QWR)! Join LIISMA and QWR staff to sample, identify, and remove aquatic invasive species.

Home Landscaping: Alternatives to Invasive Plants

July 9, Tuesday. 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM at the Flanders Community Center
July 12, Friday. 2:30 PM – 4 PM at the Bridgehampton Community Center

Altered Habitats: Invasive Species in the Wild and What We Can Do

July 10, Wednesday. 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM at the Bridgehampton Community Center
July 11, Thursday. 2:30 PM – 4 PM at the Flanders Community Center

Invasive species are creeping into our fields, forests, and waters. Come to this informational session to learn about rising threats, what to look for, and how you can help. Light refreshments provided.

Common Invasive Plants: How to Identify and Remove

July 13, Saturday. 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM, meet at the Hampton Bays Justice Court

Learn on-the-ground identification skills! We will show one of the areas (Hampton Bays Transfer Station) where the Town is working to control invasive species. You will also have the opportunity to pull some plants yourself! This is a great chance to learn some invasive species control skills. If you are interested in pulling plants, please bring gardening gloves, eye protection, and water to drink. We will provide anti-tick spray and gear.
