[ARCHIVED] Hampton Bays Water District Listens To Residents Concerns One Year After Water Woes

HBWD customers

About thirty Hampton Bays residents turned out for an informational meeting by the Hampton Bays Water District (HBWD) on Monday, July 15, 2019 at 7pm to update the community about continued efforts to improve water quality, almost one year after the Hamlet experienced issues with water discoloration last summer.

District managers told those in attendance, including a representative from the Suffolk County Health Department and a representative from water consultant H2M, that the main plant is operating properly with all three wells using the new carbon filtration system to clear any possible contaminants.

Last summer, many HBWD customers experienced discolored water and low pressure as the District worked to install the new carbon filtration system combined with the increased demand in summer usage.

Since that time, the Southampton Town Board, who are also Commissioners of the HBWD, contracted with D&B engineers to develop a ten year master plan for the district, to recommend what priorities should be done first and costs associated with the recommended improvements.

The district also plans to adopt a well upgrade program to replace one well a year, instead of replacing them every 7 or more years.  Other expected upgrades include the installation of a filtration system to remove Iron and Manganese at Field 4 on Bellows Pond Road and the refinishing of the elevated tank, both interior and exterior.

The Hampton Bays Water District will plan the next Community Outreach Meeting when the Board of Commissioners receives the report from D&B engineers and recommendations are made.
