It was a close race and in the end there was a tie in the annual Cardboard Boat Race on the Peconic River, Saturday August 10, 2019. Riverhead Supervisor Laura Jens Smith and Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman paddled their cardboard boats on the Peconic River for the annual boat race and at the mid-way point they were neck and neck.
But in the end, in front of hundreds of cheering spectators they hit the finish line together. And in the true spirit of their shared interest in the Peconic River the Supervisor’s will share the trophy. Southampton will keep the trophy for six months and then turn it back to Riverhead for the second half of the year. The two will meet again next August to compete again for the trophy and bragging rights.
Last year Riverhead Supervisor Laura Jens Smith won the race. The previous year Southampton Supervisor Jay Schneiderman beat former Riverhead Supervisor Sean Walter.
Supervisor Schneiderman has used the same cardboard boat, he constructed himself, for three years in a row. Supervisor Jens Smith has used the same boat that was made by Brookhaven National Lab, two years in a row. Supervisor Schneiderman will hand over the trophy to Supervisor Jens Smith in February for her turn to hold it until the next race, when he plans to win it back.
