[ARCHIVED] Councilman Bouvier Highlights Sustainable Southampton Programs

Southampton Town Councilman John Bouvier held a press conference Monday, August 19, 2019 at the Conscience Point Marina in North Sea to highlight Town objectives, programs and policies designed to reduce greenhouse gases, thwart climate change, demonstrate environmental stewardship and improve the quality of life in our community.

“I am always amazed by what determined and creative people can do.  Southampton Town is most fortunate to have such skilled staff and volunteers who give so much of their time to help us reach our energy and environmental goals that are critical to the future,” said Councilman John Bouvier.  “We share a common goal and know that inaction is just not an option.”

Deputy Supervisor Frank Zappone offered these comments. “I sometimes refer to Councilman Bouvier as the educator in chief on the Town Board as it relates to sustainability issues. The reality is that in almost all instances where the Town Board voted on sustainability policies and/or programs, the votes have been unanimous, testimony to the shared leadership and commitment of the Town Board.”

After the press conference, Councilman Bouvier, Trustee Ann Welker and some members of the Sustainability Committee were treated to a battery-operated boat ride that demonstrated how clean renewable battery technology is being embraced by all sectors, including marine.

The Town’s goal is to achieve 100% renewably sourced energy by 2025 and carbon neutral by 2040.  Just last week the Town Board voted unanimously to hire a Community Choice Aggregation Administrator, which would make the Town of Southampton the first municipality on Long Island to accomplish this.  For more information, contact John Bouvier at 631-287-5745.
