The biting was good and the kids were delighted to reel in some big snappers at the annual Snapper Derby held by the Town of Southampton Parks and Recreation Department at Tiana Bayside Recreational Facility in Hampton Bay on Thursday, August 22, 2019. Approximately fifty children and adults participated in the annual event which was co-sponsored by Hampton Watercraft and Marine of Hampton Bays who supplied bait and prizes for the event.
Prizes were awarded in five categories--most fish caught in 4 different age groups, and largest fish overall. The winner of the 5 to 8 year old category for most snappers caught was 8 year old Henry Minnerop, in the 9 to 11 year old category was 11 year old Michael Moore, in the 12 to 14 year old category was 12 year old Joseph Cosenza, and the winner in the 15 to adult category was 16 year old Dennis Lynch. All winners received a rod and reel.
The prize for largest snapper overall went to six year old John Stella, who reeled in the 7 and ¾ inch long fish with his dad, John. He won a fully stocked tackle box.
