The Southampton Town Community Centers remain closed for seniors’ congregate meals and activity programs during the COVID 19 pandemic but the staff now takes wellness checks on the road. A group of staff members board the Community Shuttle and visit the seniors in their front yards.
“It’s a great way for us to check up on them during the pandemic,” said Senior Services Director Liz Dwyer. “They’re like family to us and we haven’t seen them in months! So we thought this would be a nice treat for them if we planned a quick visit with some home baked treats from the kitchen staff.”
Many of the seniors receive home delivered meals from the Town’s nutrition program but the seniors miss the social interaction. One senior displayed a sign on her home to welcome the drive-by. The sign read: “I love and miss all of you. Hugs and Kisses”.
During the pandemic, Senior Services also stays connected with seniors at home with weekly newsletters and links to programs that can be found on the internet related to a theme for each day of the week, like Thrill Seeking Thursday and Feel Good Friday. Give the Senior Center a call at 631-728-1235 or reach out via email at seniorservices@southamptontownny.gov to be added to their email list!
They also offer Yoga video instruction with Beth, their in-house instructor, on their own YouTube channel:
