Hello and Happy Spring!!
Here’s a brief update on some of our recent and upcoming activities.
Each year, the Order of the Eastern Star, Suffolk District, selects a local Veterans organization to support through their several fundraisers. This year they have selected Honor Flight Long Island!!
Bowling for Veterans will be held on Sunday, April 7th at 3 pm at the East Islip Lanes at 117 E Main St in East Islip.
Proceeds will support Honor Flight Long Island.
It’s $30 per-person to attend the event ($20 for non-Bowlers), and that includes 2 games, shoe rental, food and soda.
We are so grateful to John Muller and the Order of the Eastern Star for their support!! Hope you can help make the event a big success.
Our WHEELCHAIR issues have been resolved. Halleluiah! The Philadelphia Honor Flight hub leader, Andrew Schiavello, heard about our plight and as luck would have it, they were downsizing and had 50 wheelchairs for us NO Charge. While at the Honor Flight Summit in Baltimore in February, our Steve Russell met with Andrew and the guys got it figured out. Philly was happy to hand off to another Honor Flight and we were more than happy and very thankful to have them
Due to another act of kindness and generosity we’re able to stash the chairs for free with Mike Maffucci and Verity Van Lines until our May 11 flight. BIG THANKS to Jamie Benatti who networked that storage solution.
Now we need to assemble a team of 6 or so volunteers to help us with our new wheelchairs before and after each flight. We’ll need to truck them to the airport the Friday night before the flight, get them back to storage that Sunday or Monday after the flight, checking foot rests and arm rest for repairs and replacements. If you can help even for one flight, let us know.
We encourage all of you who are passionate about what we do to get involved in some way through recruiting veterans, helping with our preflight, post flight, or reunion activities and more!
Honor Flight Long Island runs on volunteer power! So many of you reached out with great ideas and offers when we asked, we can’t thank you enough!! Of course the big winners are our Veterans!! We’re almost ready for our May 11 flight with just a few details to put in place. We hope you’ll be able to join us at the airport to welcome home our Veterans. Southwest Flight #3885 is scheduled to return at 9:50pm.
Thanks for your support!!
