Town of Southampton, NY March 20, 2024 — In a continued effort to enhance community safety the Southampton Town Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management teamed up with UL Solutions to bring valuable training to staff in the Code Enforcement Division, Fire Marshal’s Office, as well as Fire Marshals from some surrounding East End jurisdictions.
Experts from UL Solutions conducted a training seminar about their processes, labeling and brand integrity monitoring efforts with Public Safety officials from Southampton Town Code Enforcement, Southampton Town Fire Marshal’s Office, Sag Harbor Village and Southold Town. Officials from the participating municipalities learned about what to look for on products and labels to identify possible issues and improper UL listings.
UL Solutions is a known leader in the product testing, inspection and certification industry. The UL label or certification has been a recognized and highly regarded symbol and standard in product safety for many years.
As a leader in the product testing, inspection and certification industry, the UL label and certification is sometimes utilized improperly by unscrupulous manufacturers or vendors to give a consumer the false impression that a product has met certain safety or testing standards. Sometimes these falsely listed products are portrayed to have capabilities that they do not have. When utilized, unassuming consumers can be placed in dangerous situations due to these products and their incompatibility with what they are being used for, or how they are being used.
“I very happy that we were able to partner with UL to host this educational opportunity in Southampton Town,” said Town Code Compliance and Emergency Management Administrator Ryan Murphy. “Having this knowledge will aid our Code Enforcement and Fire Marshals in trying to proactively reduce injuries and losses within our community by looking for products that might pose risks in the course of their normal inspections,” Murphy said.
Southampton Town Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara, who is a liaison to Public Safety, said, “I’m proud of the progressive efforts of our Town Public Safety officials to bring this presentation to our Town and how they continuously strive to increase their knowledge and capabilities in an effort to provide for the safety of our residents and visitors.”
