At Tuesday’s Town Board meeting, the Town Board adopted Resolution, 2024-1333, sponsored by Councilmember Michael Iasilli, which updates Chapter 150 of the Town Code to protect animals and people from pets not in control by their owners. Firstly, it clarifies the existing code where it states dog owners must have their pets “under control” to specifying that all dogs must be leashed when walking on neighborhood streets and sidewalks.
Secondly, it helps address public safety considerations. In the Town of Southampton, there is a strong correlation between the safety of people and dogs being leashed. There are also numerous occasions where Public Safety has intervened to address the issue of unleashed dogs and the safety of pedestrians.
Public Safety director Ryan Murphy stated the following, “This update to the Town Code helps to eliminate a degree of subjectivity that previously existed in the Code. We are hopeful that clarifying the language to require a leash in the areas identified will help to reduce complaints, and some of the unfortunate negative interactions that occur between dogs and humans, as well as dogs and other animals.”
“This is a great step in ensuring the safety of individuals and families who seek regular recreation in their neighborhoods. Whether riding their bikes, jogging, or walking, this new law aims to provide greater peace of mind for residents in Southampton Town. Likewise, this protects other pets who are adequately under control by their owners,” said Councilmember Michael Iasilli.
