What: Throughout the month of June, the Town reaffirms its commitment to equality and inclusion for all and, as a time to honor the resilience, contributions, and visibility of the LGBTQ+ community. This year, the Town is hosting a Press Conference to recognize and celebrate the historic impact of Edith Windsor’s advocacy in helping bring forth marriage equality in the United States. Her efforts helped overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 2013, allowing same sex couples to achieve equal rights. Likewise, the effort will reignite the Edith Windsor Heart Project established in 2023.

Why: The Edith Windsor Heart Project is a heart shaped memorial tribute to Edie Windsor composed of 220 smaller interlocking hearts, each with a personalized engraving, established in 2023 by the Southampton Town Board. The platform has been used to conduct civil marriage ceremonies and symbolizes the Town’s commitment to justice and equality for all.
Engraved hearts may be ordered using the link below. All monies raised will go toward the construction and maintenance of the Edith Windsor Heart. Additional proceeds will be used to support The Edith Windsor Health Clinic, at Stony Brook Southampton.
