Councilmember Michael Iasilli successfully spearheaded the passage of a new Dark Skies law (RESO #48175) in Southampton, reinforcing the town’s commitment to reducing light pollution, protecting nocturnal wildlife, and enhancing quality of life. This initiative builds upon his earlier efforts, including the establishment of April as “Dark Skies Month,” to promote awareness and education on the importance of preserving our night skies.
Through collaboration with the Town’s Dark Skies Committee and the Town Planning Department, the new legislation introduces stricter guidelines for nonresidential outdoor lighting, lowering kelvin from 3,000 to 2,700, which corresponds to best lighting practices and recommendations set forth by organizations like the International Dark Skies Association. All of which aim to minimize excessive illumination that disrupt the natural environment.
“Our night skies are a vital part of Southampton’s character and charm,” stated Councilmember Iasilli. “This legislation not only preserves our East End way of life, but is a great first step in enhancing the well being of our community and broader protections for wildlife.”
The Dark Skies Committee will be continuing to educate residents through a broad range of educational programs in the upcoming year on best practices to encourage cost savings on electricity usage and the enjoyment of the night sky. “I want to thank the Southampton Town Dark Skies Committee for their efforts in helping us get this legislation done,” added Councilmember Iasilli.
